Sesame Street Season 24 - Season 29 aired from November 9, 1992, to May 15, 1998.

Overview[]

The curriculum for Season 24 is focusing on Latino culture. "There will also be more emphasis on the Spanish language," says Ms. Valeria Lovelace, since her research showed that many children have negative feelings about Spanish. For example, the show will feature songs with abierto and cerrado, the Spanish words for open and close. Preschoolers will learn simple words and phrases that will help them make friends with Spanish speakers. The show will also feature Latino guest stars.

A new segment for this season, "Big Bird's Video Postcards," will have Big Bird visit different parts of the United States and learn about people of different ethnicities and participate in their cultural activities or pastimes. With the focus on Latino culture, Big Bird will "see mask-making in Spanish Harlem, children playing games in Spanish in Union City, N.J., Spanish murals in Los Angeles and children counting in Spanish in El Salvador. Big Bird will conduct a children's mariachi band, learn traditional Cuban songs and eat a birdseed burrito while he visits his friend, Diego, in Arizona."

Later on, starting this season, Sesame Street expands its street to Around the Corner. Sonia Manzano said about this whole new block of locations, "By expanding the street and going around the corner, we will have other places to hang out beyond the stoop of 123 Sesame Street, and we will be able to explore family issues which we think are so important to kids today." This season also introduces new human characters and (mostly female) Muppet characters. Michael Loman: "We've been criticized in the past for not having enough female puppets on the show. And I think that's an accurate criticism. And this specifically seeks to address that."

This season focuses on the importance of books. Its literacy campaign, "Let's Read and Write," initiated by executive producer Michael Loman, served as the theme for that year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade float.

This season is considered to be the "experimental season" - it is "increasingly presenting its lessons in overlapping ways, to reach those whose learning may be more closely tied to musical or mathematical abilities than linguistic ones."

Notes[]

  • Starting with this season, the opening sequence has changed from the standard footage of kids playing, to an upbeat, colorful sequence with a calypso version of the theme, and more Muppets in it.
  • This season also introduces a new closing credits sequence set to a hip-hop version of the theme, with animation by Joey Ahlbum and featuring appearances by Elmo and Big Bird. This sequence would continue to be used until 2007, long after the calypso opening was retired. An instrumental riff from the closing also plays during the funding credits starting this season and until 1995.
  • Episodes 3136-3200 and 3238 were shown as a part of Noggin's 123 Sesame Street package from 1999 until 2003.
  • Starting with this season, the colors on the set, such as Big Bird's doors or the checkers on Hooper's Store, are much more vibrant and bright, giving the set a more child-friendly atmosphere.
  • This was the first season taped at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, New York.
  • This season introduces Zoe to the cast.
  • Starting with this season, the closing credit sequence, which typically appeared on Friday episodes, is also shown during the season premiere.
  • This was Jon Stone's final season as a series director before his death in 1997.
  • After this season, The U.S. Department of Education stopped funding Sesame Street until Season 33.
  • This was also the final season to be funded by the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, which had been among the first funders for the show; they were credited underwriters from the first pilot episode.
  • This was also the final season to have the Sesame Street/CTW in-credit logo.
  • This was also Savion's final season.
  • This was the final season until Season 38 to have two letter sponsors
  • Starting this season, each episode ends with a preview of the next episode. Big Bird appears announcing "Coming Soon on Sesame Street," followed by a clip of a Street scene or insert from said episode. After this, Big Bird says, "Toodle-oo" and the funding credits are shown. The "coming soon" teasers were dropped in season 30.
  • This is the last season Camille Bonora and Louise Gold would perform in.
  • This was the first season since Season 2 to have one letter and number as sponsors.
  • This was also the first season to give the sponsors twinkling sound effects at the end of each episode.
  • Starting with this season and lasting through Season 33 (2002), the main closing music at the end of episodes is a remix of the original Sesame Street opening theme from 1969 (replacing the calypso-flavored rendition heard at the end of episodes for the past two seasons). This version retains the sung verses by The Kids, features a new harmonica solo, and closes out with the ending from Toots Thielemans's original harmonica closing.
    • This is the last season with Norman Stiles as head writer. Stiles shares credit with his successor Lou Berger, who continued to serve as head writer until Season 39.
    • Prior to the season premiere, press statements about the season announced various celebrity guests who were not featured in any episodes. These celebrities include Hootie & the Blowfish, Shaquille O'Neal, Cal Ripken Jr., Nathan Lane, Plácido Domingo, Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard, Monica Seles, Patti LaBelle, Vanessa Williams, and the cast of Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk.
  • Slimey makes a historic trip to the moon over a six episode arc, with references to the journey in additional episodes. The events were later included in a timeline montage of clips from the show when Sesame Street celebrated its 35th Anniversary with the television broadcast of The Street We Live On.
  • Episodes made during Slimey's moon mission story arc would always end with the progress of Slimey's moon mission, typically by a character (usually the one announcing the sponsors) saying "And Slimey's spaceship is still on its way to the moon" for when the Wiggleprise is heading toward the moon, or "And Slimey's spaceship is still on its way back to Sesame Street" for the return trip. Episodes that recycled street scenes from the 27th season would have a generic bumper at the end of the episode, before the credits or "Coming Soon on Sesame Street" segment, with Martin P. Robinson announcing the same lines (depending on the progress of the mission) accompanied by the Worms in Space theme music.
  • This is the last season Mr. Handford, Celina, Lexine, and Carlo appear in.
  • This was the final season to feature the Around the Corner setting, as well as the final season to use the calypso version of the opening Sesame Street Theme, introduced in Season 24. However, the animated end credits, also introduced at that time, will continue to be used on later seasons until 2007.
  • This was the last season produced with 130 episodes.
  • This season introduces a fuzzier puppet build for Elmo, the design of which has been used ever since.
  • This was the final season before the filming of The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland despite that the film was not released until five months after Season 30 finished airing. This is evidenced by Alan Muraoka's absence in the movie, Hooper's Store retaining its original exterior design and the use of the Around the Corner sets.
  • Several episodes from this season were later rebroadcast in 1999 shortly before the premiere of Season 31, most of them being from the "Slimey to the Moon" storyline. Some inserts and songs produced that year would debut in some of the episodes.
